MISSIONS Like the Church, the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi Movement are essentially missionary. They actively preach the Gospel to all who have not yet heard the message of salvation. They have taken to heart Christ''s commandment, "Go and preach to all people, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún In 1970 Pope Paul VI entrusted the Legion of Christ with the care of the Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún which covers 19,360 square miles of the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). Paul VI appointed Mons. Jorge Bernal Vargas, L.C., as its first prelate. Most of the natives in this region are Mayans whose population numbers approximately 850,000. They work as farmers or manual laborers. For their spiritual care, Bishop Bernal counts on the presence of 10% of all Legionary priests and numerous Regnum Christi lay coworkers. The Legionaries serving as missionaries have built religiousgood approximately 230 churches and chapels since 1970. Some of the indigenous laity work as full-time catechists.

Full Time Catechists The Legionaries of Christ implemented a plan for forming and maintaining professional, full-time religiousgood catechists in Latin America over 20 years ago. Its purpose is to check the tremendous advance of secularism, religious indifference, and the proselytism of pseudo-religious sects. The Full Time Catechist project is intended to support bishops by preparing evangelizers and placing them at the service of dioceses and parishes. These committed lay men and women, working as couples or individually, function as catechists. They always work in close cooperation with bishops and parish priests. In order to carry out their work, full-time evangelizers receive a salary that enables them to live decently while fulfilling their specific mission.
